Bad behavior in the homework trapped child is actually
adaptive behavior in the face of demands he cannot meet. He has developed negative
feelings to the word, homework, itself. He has been punished for things that he
cannot correct. The sign of a good
punishment is that it is not needed anymore. Punishments that continue, without
altering behavior, reinforce what we call, “bad behavior. “ For homework
success, it is critical to decondition the negative feelings about homework and
to shape homework-doing behavior. This can only take place with a conscious
effort to reduce tension when homework is to be done, and to modify penalties,
so that the child experiences rewards for getting some of the work done.
